Remember the Titans is a sports movie with a message about racial harmony. The film is set in 1971 in Virginia in the United States. T. C. Williams High School has been desegregated and Herman Boone, is hired as head coach for the school’s new football team, taking the place of well-liked current Coach Bill Yoast. Yoast at first refuses Boone’s offer as the assistant head coach, but then changes his mind after his white players pledge to boycott if he doesn’t coach. Not wanting the boys to throw away their chances at scholarships, Yoast takes up position of second assistant coach after much convincing.
The tension between the African-American and the white players erupts during training camp when the old team leader Gerry Bertier squares off against Big Julius Campbell. Following the brawl, both men form a close bond and when Coach Boone forces each player to ask questions of and get to know each other, the hostility is replaced by understanding and tolerance. It’s a feeling not so readily shared by the other citizens of Alexandria, the mainly white town in which the school is located.
Against all odds, the Titans succeed. Even though they are separated by the colour of their skin, with the help of their remarkable coaches, they see past that, to come together, and bond together to face a world that is totally against them.
