1984 in charity bin

An authentic first edition of George Orwell’s novel 1984 that turned up in a pile of books donated to Lifeline has sold for $2618.

The book was found last week by a Lifeline volunteer on the NSW south coast in a bin of 200 books.

The 1949 first British edition with a red dustcover was sold in a blind auction at Lifeline’s fundraising book fair in Wollongong this weekend, a Lifeline spokesman said.

The Orwell novel was one of 66,000 books donated, and Lifeline last week said it could not identify where it had come from.
