The film version of Trash sounds really interesting. Andy Mulligan set Trash in an imaginary and unspecified Third World country so filmmakers had to decide where to film it.
Where they decided to film was Jardin Gramacho, the world’s biggest landfill, located outside Rio de Janeiro in Brazil. When the film was cast director Stephen Daldry (pictured with the film’s stars Martin Sheen and Rooney Mara) wanted non-acting Rio kids to make the film more authentic. Another important choice was language, Trash is 80% Portuguese and 20% English.
